No.1 Poultry, Bank
James Stirling's postmodern block at Bank, banded in pink and yellow stone, all curves, drums and portholes. It is the youngest building ever listed in Britain, loud and playful among the grey of the City, and its rooftop holds the Coq d'Argent restaurant with a garden looking over Bank junction.
Best time: low sun to fire up the pink and yellow stone. Rush hour at street level below.
Look for: the striped stonework as bold graphic colour, the circular window openings framing sky or figures, and the clock corner over Bank. From the rooftop garden, the junction laid out below.
Any. Expose for the stone so the colour stays saturated; a polariser deepens the sky behind it.
Treat the stripes and portholes as pure colour and shape. Make a frame that is about pattern, with a person as the accent.
