Royal Exchange & Bank Junction

Royal Exchange, Bank junction, EC3V

The eight-columned Corinthian portico of the Royal Exchange presides over Bank, where seven streets collide in front of it. One side is grand Victorian stone and suited workers on the steps; the other is the swirl of buses, cyclists and crowds pouring across the junction. A natural stage with a ready-made backdrop.

Best time: weekday rush hours, 8 to 9.30am and 5 to 6.30pm, for the flood of commuters. Lunchtime for workers on the steps.

Look for: figures dwarfed under the columns, a red bus sliding across the classical facade, and the choreography of people crossing the junction from a raised step. Suits against stone.

Camera Settings

Any. Zone focus at f/8 around 3m for the crossing; keep shutter above 1/250 for movement.

The Assignment

Frame the columns as your background and wait for one strong figure or a bus to complete the shot.
