St Albans, Hertfordshire

A Roman city with a cathedral, a market, independent shops, and the kind of middle-class English high street that Parr would have photographed immediately.

Best time: Wednesday and Saturday for the market. Any weekend for the high street.

Look for: the market and its characters. The cathedral as backdrop for street portraits. The contrast between Roman history and estate agents selling properties for £800,000.

Camera Settings

Any. Flash in daylight for the Parr approach on market days.

The Assignment

Saturday market. Photograph the middle-class high street without irony.
