Where it works: a car show (owner beside the bonnet), a dog show, an allotment open day, a market stall, a record fair, a model railway club — anywhere someone stands guard over something they're proud of.

Best time: mid-event, when they've relaxed into the day and forgotten the camera.

Look for: the unguarded moment, not the pose — the glance down at the thing, the explaining hand, the quiet satisfaction of being asked about it.
