Betting Shops

With permission. The ritual of it.

Betting shops have a specific clientele and atmosphere - the screens, the slips, the expressions of hope and disappointment.

How to shoot it: Permission first, because this is a closed and wary world. Shoot the screens, the slips, the pens on strings, and above all the faces, the hope and the slump a second later. Dim interior light means high ISO and a fast lens. Keep it unshowy and compassionate, the subject is quiet tragedy as much as social document, and contempt will show in every frame.

The output: A series that's social document and quiet tragedy simultaneously.
