Seaside and city in one frame. The beachfront gives you the full British seaside tradition — the Palace Pier, the deckchairs, the arcades — while The Lanes and North Laine give you dense, narrow, characterful streets a few minutes inland. Few places let you shoot both genres in an afternoon.

Best time: summer weekends and Pride for the crowds and colour. Winter for the empty pier and hard low light off the sea.

Look for: the pier and beach for the Parr-ish seaside frames, North Laine for shopfronts, characters and layered street scenes, and the seafront between the two piers for the melancholy pictures — the burnt-out West Pier still standing in the water is one of the most photographed structures on the south coast.
