In an affluent suburb the cars tell the story better than the people do. The 4x4 filling the drive, the personalised plate, the car worth more than a flat, washed and chamois-dried on a Sunday, parked outside a house it deliberately matches. Photograph the relationship between people, their cars and their homes, and you photograph the place itself.

Look for: the car and the house in one frame, the wash-and-polish ritual, the plate as a statement, the driveway used as a stage. Reflections of the street bent across clean bodywork are a bonus.

Best time: weekend mornings, when people tend their cars like gardens.
