The Bystander's Reaction

At every gathering the best pictures are often the people not taking part — the double-take, the bored partner dragged along, the child unimpressed by what the adults love, the passer-by stopped in their tracks.

Where it works: any event with an audience as well as participants — car shows, parades, street performers, markets, sporting events.

Best time: during the peak of whatever's drawing attention, when reactions are strongest.

Camera Settings

f/8, fast shutter, zone focus at 2–3m so you catch reactions as they happen.
